United States Senator Jeff Merkley from Oregon presented the Josephine County Foundation with an American flag at a ceremony held at Illinois Valley High School in Cave Junction. JCF received this flag in honor of becoming an official IRS recognized 501c3 non-profit which was a major achievement and source of pride for the Foundation. JCF students Ashley Pearson, Hidden Valley High School, and Skyla Patton & Seth Kitchens, both from Illinois Valley High School, attended the ceremony on behalf of JCF.
Skyla, JCF’s co-President, spoke about JCF’s mission and vision for the future while Ashley received the flag. Skyla said, “JCF has done so much to receive this flag and we can’t wait to do so much more for our community.”
Skyla also received an autographed photograph of Senator Merkley and the three students at the ceremony signed by the Senator which reads, “Skyla – Congratulations on your leadership, never stop working to build a better world!” Merkley spoke about all the community service projects JCF had accomplished and encouraged the community to support JCF so it can continue its community service work now that donations would be tax deductible with JCF’s new non-profit status. The flag is mounted in a frame and proudly displayed in the JCF office.
